Movie Review – On the Basis of Sex (2018)

On the Basis of Sex, 2018.

Directed by Mimi Leder.

Starring Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston, Kathy Bates, Cailee Spaeny, Jack Reynor, Stephen Root, Chris Mulkey, Gary Werntz, Francis X. McCarthy and Ben Carlson.

Synopsis:

The true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.

On the Basis of Sex is a timely telling of an inspirational true story, that of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones), the second-ever female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and a feminist icon. It both demands and earns its place on the screen.

With all the upheaval in both international and – more specifically, for here – American politics, a no-nonsense, hard-working and liberal icon such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg being made the star of her own biopic is a welcome distraction.

Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells Talk Snorting ‘Coke’ on ‘Black Monday’

  • Variety
“Black Monday” show creators David Caspe and Jordan Cahen divulged an intriguing detail to come later in the first season of the new Showtime comedy at its world premiere, held at the Theatre at Ace Hotel on Monday night in Los Angeles.

“The fourth or fifth episode opens with a sexual harassment seminar, which very well could be the first ever,” Caspe said of the series, which takes place in the 1980s. “So that was a very fun, kind of f—ed up thing to explore. I think we were just trying to satirize what’s happening now and this was a good prism to view it through.”

The half-hour comedy series, which reportedly took 11 years to get off the ground, reimagines the events leading up to the infamous stock market crash of 1987. The cutthroat world of stock broking serves as an exaggerated backdrop to the gender-fueled power struggle on

Here’s How Martian Manhunter Could Have Looked In Justice League: Mortal

The tale of Justice League: Mortal is legendary amongst superhero film fans. Though DC lovers had to wait until 2017 to get a Justice League movie, they could’ve got one back in 2009 if Warner Bros.’ initial plans had gone through. Mad Max director George Miller was supposed to helm the all-star team-up film that would’ve beaten The Avengers to the punch by three years, but production issues ultimately stopped it from reaching cameras.

Over time, we’ve gotten some glimpses at how the characters could’ve appeared in the movie, such as Armie Hammer’s Batman, Megan Gale’s Wonder Woman and D.J. Cotrona’s Superman. However, we haven’t had a good look at what Hugh Keays-Byrne could’ve looked like as Martian Manhunter. Fan artist Spdrmnkyxxiii has now taken a stab at imagining what might’ve been though, creating a possible character design for J’onn J’onzz in Mortal.

Aaron Sorkin Knows They Should Make a ‘Social Network’ Sequel (Video)
Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 film “The Social Network” told the story of Facebook’s beginnings. But the screenwriter is very aware that in the eight years since the Jesse Eisenberg-led flick premiered, there have been more than a few headlines about things going on over at Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

“Yes, a lot of very interesting dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends, with settling the lawsuit from the the Winklevoss twins (played by Armie Hammer in the movie) and Eduardo Saverin (portrayed by Andrew Garfield),” Sorkin told the Associated Press in a recent interview. “And Scott [Rudin], who produced ‘The Social Network,’ I’ve gotten more than one email from him with an article attached saying, ‘Isn’t it time for a sequel?'”

And, yes, Sorkin agrees they should make a follow-up to the David Fincher-directer film.

‘The Upside’ Likely to Become Stx Films’ First No. 1 Debut
There seems to be no downside to Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart’s comedy-drama “The Upside.”

The Stx Films pic is on its way to becoming the entertainment company’s first No. 1 debut with an estimated $19.5 million from 3,080 North American sites, knocking Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” into the second place slot. Stx Films’ previous biggest debut was 2016’s “Bad Moms,” which landed $23.8 million for the No. 3 spot.

The Upside” took in $6.95 million on Friday and is looking at a weekend estimate nearly double what the film had initially projected, which may be due to the film’s recutting in order to land a PG-13 rating as opposed to its original R. Stx Films reached a distribution deal with Lantern Entertainment, which formed out of the Weinstein Company’s remaining assets, to handle the pic. It was originally intended to be released last year, but was postponed after the Weinstein scandal.

On the Basis of Sex: Felicity Jones Channels Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Don Kaye Jan 10, 2019

On the Basis of Sex star Felicity Jones tells us how she approached playing the role of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg may be the most well-known and recognized Supreme Court Justice of the modern era, and the new film On the Basis of Sex chronicles her career and details the landmark case that she and her husband Martin took on, which changed the course of their lives and the courts’ view of gender discrimination for decades since.

In an era when women were expected to stay home and fulfill the typical gender roles of housewife and mother, Ruth fought against a legal establishment that was firmly in the grip of men to teach, practice law and eventually ascend all the way to the Supreme Court, on which she was seated in 1993 and still serves today.
